Diabetology

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing health problems worldwide, states the International Diabetes Federation based on numbers from 2021. In particular, the number of persons with type 2 diabetes is increasing at lightning speed. They make up more than 90 percent of all persons with diabetes, and their condition is often partly the result of an unhealthy lifestyle. It is a problem that also poses itself in our country. The unhealthy, Western lifestyle and increasing obesity rates - 59.5% of adult Belgians are overweight, according to the World Health Organization - worry the Diabetes League. Diabetes rates are alarming: the most recent data from Sciensano estimates that 1.14 million Belgians have type 2 diabetes; in Flanders, this is about 600,000 people. Even more shocking: one in three Belgians with type 2 diabetes - some 400,000 - do not yet know they have the condition.
